Inspired by the smoky sophisticate with men’s Louis tucked under her arm, she knows her coffee by scent and her whiskey by warmth, she folds the foil from chocolate kisses into tiny silver origami, prefers a smolder to a sparkle, listens to the scratches as much as the jazz, her wrists imbued in vetiver and tonka, apartment suffused with Marrakesh spice, tortoiseshell over her eyes, velvet beneath her, walnut at her back, and all that is molten, dusky, steady, and rich. “Do you regret it?” she asks. “No. You?” he says. “No.”
